History

Margeli was founded in February 2017 and is therefore a young and fresh company. Yet  we have many years of experience, because the owner, Marga van Gent-Petter, has been professionally formed in the English-speaking world since 1985. After a year of volunteer work in Conference centre Lee Abbey, Lynton, North Devon, England, she started her studies in English language and literature at the Vrije University (VU) in Amsterdam. Selected as one of the Prof. Harting scholars in 1990, she obtained her Master’s degree in linguistics at the University of North Wales in Bangor in 1991. The following year she graduated from the VU University and started on a PhD in generative linguistics (syntax). In 1994 she spent a semester at the University of Massachussetts in Amherst. She successfully defended her dissertation in the summer of 1998. Since then she has worked as a teacher of English and linguistics at the University of Amsterdam (UVA), the VU and the Christelijke Hogeschool Ede/ University of Applied Sciences (CHE) in Ede and more recently at the Hogeschool Utrecht (HU). Alongside her studies and regular jobs, she has always worked freelance or on a voluntary basis as a translator, interpreter, proof-reader and copywriter.

Knowledge, experience and skills

Margeli guarantees the reliability of its translations, because they are rooted in thorough linguistic knowledge of and experience with the culture of the British and American English-speaking world in particular.

The translator lived in North Devon (England, UK) for a year. She also lived and studied for a year in Bangor (Wales,UK). Thirdly, she spent one semester on courses and research at UMass, Amherst,  New England (USA) in preparation for her PhD in linguistics. These experiences make the translator skilful in the conscious application of language-specific techniques and culturally defined nuances that enhance the efficiency of the text.

Creativity and focus

Fun in translating is paramount at Margeli. Playing with language and solving puzzles to get the right effects makes every translation a challenge. Sometimes it helps to stare out of the window and give your brain some air to come up with a beautiful find. For example, a newsletter article for CMN contained an intended play on words in Dutch: Bij courseware moet moeten en maggen niet maggen. A literal translation would be somewhat awkward, e.g.  ‘For courseware it should be forbidden to use ‘should’, ‘must’ and ‘have to’. With a little creativity, yet maintaining the message, the translation arrived at has a playful and attractive rhyming pattern: ‘Courseware should never be force-ware! ‘

Our mission is to approach the content and purpose of the original as closely as possible in our translations by constantly being conscious of the nuances of meaning in both languages involved and with an eye for detail as for choice of words and language-specific phrases  and constructions.
